Area Agency on Aging

 
 
 

Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging (Area Agency on Aging) is an organization established by the Older Americans Act of 1965 to advocate for older adults through planning, training, technical assistance, and resource development.  We serve older adults and their caregivers within the counties of Beaufort, Bertie, Hertford, Martin, and Pitt. Visit our Demographics web page for information on the people and area we serve. Our offices are located at 1385 John Small Avenue in Washington, Beaufort County, North Carolina. The AAA functions to: 1) develop an area plan for a comprehensive and coordinated system of home and community care; 2) establish and fund networks of local service providers; 3) serve as an advocate and focal point for older adults within the region; and, 4) house the Long Term Ombudsman Program, Family Caregiver Support Program, and Project C.A.R.E. (Caregiver Alternative to Running on Empty).

      

As one of 17 Area Agencies on Aging in North Carolina, our goals are to:

  • administer the Home & Community Care Block Grant services, Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, Family Caregiver Support Program, and other grant funded services;

  • develop a comprehensive and coordinated system of service delivery within our counties;

  • develop and administer an area aging plan based on needs of older adults and their family caregivers, as well as input from county aging committees;

  • help local communities respond to issues of aging through training, planning, assessment, and technical assistance;

  • generate public and private resources to maintain or increase services for older adults and their caregivers;

  • expand Project C.A.R.E. into eastern North Carolina

  • advocate for residents of long term care facilities and older adults living in the community;

  • convene and staff regional and local planning committees to study current aging issues;

  • provide technical assistance to regional members of the NC Senior Tar Heel Legislature;

  • promote professional development for aging service providers;

  • provide support to local Nursing Home and Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committees;

  • resolve grievances in nursing homes and adult care homes;

  • provide information and assistance to older consumers, caregivers, and family members;

  • distribute information about current legislation affecting older adults;

  • facilitate in the creation of housing choices through program formation, advocacy, and proposal development; and

  • provide support to Senior Games and other wellness programs.

  • In an effort to effectively carry out our goals and functions, we are involved in numerous projects aside from those as stated above. Some of these include:

  • actively work to implement and support Support Teams;

  • function as a Data Hub for NC Carelink - an on-line searchable database for consumers to quickly get information on resources in our counties, as well as throughout the state;

  • advocate to inform and educate on the prevention of Elder Abuse;

  • staff the Regional Aging Advisory Committee as well as other advocacy and planning committees;

  • maintain demographics of the older adult population within our region and monitor budgets of HCCBG service expenditures;

  • provide Reverse Mortgage Counseling;

  • assist with the Senior Health Insurance Information Program;

  • actively participate in the Senior Medicare Patrol Program in our counties;

  • support the Older Worker Program

  • manage the Seniors' Center in Belhaven

  • provide evidence-based programming in our counties, and,

  • operate the Mid-East Development Corporation.
